Death of Jacob V. TROOP (abridged) Mr. Troop was in the 73rd year of his age at the time of his death. He was born in Upper Granville, N.S. where he carried on the business of a general trader for several years. About 40 years ago he removed to St. John and opened a flour and general provision store on the North Market Wharf. His first venture in shipping was the schr. "Kate", a vessel of 60 tons burthen. For years Mr. Troop kept adding to his fleet of small vessels which were used maily in the West Indies business. Gradually as the freight market there became unprofitable, Mr. Troop transferred his operations to vessels of a larger class. The vessels that he was interested in after that period were mainly built in the shipyards established by himseld with Mr. YOUNG in Nova Scotia and John S. PARKER, Tynemouth Creek. It was to the enlarged ideas of Mr. Troop, assisted by his son, Howard D. TROOP that the character and outfit of our spruce vessels reached their present high stage of perfection.
