The following is clipped from the Mancelona Herald, Mich. respecting a youth born in thic city and who has done well in the west. He is a nephew of William DOUGHERTY of the customs dept. of this city: The subject of our sketch first saw the light of day at Saint John, N.B. Oct. 17th, 1863. He parents moved to Charlevox in '68 and, of course, Andrew DOUGHERTY wasn't left behind. Mr. Dougherty's father followed the vocation of ship builder and securing a position with the Elk Rapids Iron Company, moved to that village in the spring of '78. Here Andrew went to school and like a good many other youngsters of his age was fond of a 'scrap', also liked to spear suckers and 'coon' watermelons in their season. He had the reputation of being a bright student and 'although full of the old nick', as one of the teachers expressed it, withal was big hearted and generous and would fight at the drop of a hat to take the part of any kid who was run on by any of the older boys. Having a taste for the study of law he entered the office of F.R. Williams in '84 where he remained until admitted to the bar five years later. Was appointed principal examiner of land claims and contest in the general lands office at Washington by President Harrison and remained in Washington in government employ until 1 June '93. He attended night lectures at the national law school.
