Blasting Accidents - Some parties of men were engaged in clearing rocks from Mullins Brook a branch of the Sevogie on N.W. Miramichi. The rocks obstructed river driving in the spring and the men were employed by R.B. WHITNEY, Esq. and under the direction of David WHITNEY to clear these obstacles. On Friday morn. last Ephraim SHERARD, Wm DONNELLY and McKENZIE were engaged at this work. They had inserted a charge and fired it but it failed to go off. The charge was drawn and another charge inserted and the fuse fired, which again failed to go off. The charge was left for some 25 minutes when about 9 a.m. they proceeded to draw the second charge. While engaged in this operation, the charge ignited and the explosion occurred. Sherard received severe injuries which caused his death in 29 hours from the time of the accident. He leaves a wife and one child. An inquest was held before Dr. A.C. Smith, Coroner. (see original)
