It appears on Monday evening, James s/o James BRIGGS, Ship-builder of Portland (St. John) was returning home about 10o'clock from a meeting of the Sons of Temperance in company with a younger brother and Geo. McLEOD, Mr. MILLIGAN and a son of John HAWS and that when near the head of Long Wharf they were deliberately fired upon by some wretches who were lurking near an alley on the South side of the road. One of the balls fired by these miscreants took deadly effect passing through the head of James BRIGGS (jr.) and he instantly fell a bleeding corpse. Another ball passed through the arm of his brother severely injuring him. On Thursday the funeral took place ... the procession proceeding to the New Burial Ground. The deceased completed his 21st year in March last. (see original)
