The death of young William SANSOM in Stanley (York Co.) on Tuesday last was an event which created a profound sensation in Stanley and all over the adjoining country. About a week ago, Mr. Sansom called on his relative Dr. MOORE in the yard of his residence; and picking up an axe commenced splitting a stick of wood. In doing so, the axe accidentally struck his ankle, inflicting a bad cut. Dr. Moore waited on him, but despite the advice of his friends he returned the following day to the woods to supervise his lumbering operations. In a short time erysipelas set in and he was conveyed home as speedily as possible. Dr. Moore attended him night and day. Symptons of an alarming nature manifested themselves early last Tuesday morn. A messenger drove in all haste to town for Dr. Atherton who arrived about a half hour after Mr. Sanson's death. He will be remembered as the buglar of the Stanley Infantry Company, 71st Batt. since the formation of the Battalion. He possed a marvelous genius for mechanics. The mill in the middle of the Nashwaak opposite Stanley was built by him. It was owned and run by himself and his cousin, William SANSON. One of the finest bridges in the county located near Stanley was built by him about a year ago. He was throughly informed in all the operations of the saw mill, the grist mill and running shingle and clapboard machines. It is impossible to conceive a more grief stricken household at this moment than that of John SANSOM and Mary SANSOM in Stanley. His sisters, Annie SANSOM and Ellen SANSOM, school teachers, as well as his immediate relations surrounded his bedside at his death. (abridged)
