A cool a frud as has appeared in this country for a long time is the ex-Rev. Wm J. CLARKE, who was tried before Judge Landry at Dorchester on Tuesday under the Speedy Trials Act on the charge of bigamy. The prisoner pleaded guilty and was remanded for sentence. When the case was before Justice Cahill for prelimenary examination, Mrs. Clarke, a woman of slight physique, rather refined looking, and of an apparent retiring disposition deposed: My name is Jane Elizabeth CLARKE and I live in Brooklyn, New York. My former home was in Amherst, N.S. and William TRUEMAN of that place was my father. On Oct. 11, 1870, Rev. Dr. Clarke married me at Amherst to the accused. My parents and other friends were at the wedding. My husband and myself resided near Amherst for 5 or 6 years then left for St. Lawrence County, N.Y. where my husband preached as an ordained Presbyterian clergyman. We stayed there for three years and then moved back to Amherst, where I remained one year. My husband left for Brooklyn, N.Y. where I followed him subsequently. He preached for a part of the time. He left me about five years ago. I have one child. He is living in Brooklyn and about 21 years of age. (see original)
