The dead body of Mrs. Margaret McCARTHY was discovered in one of the rooms of her house on Main Street about 8 o'clock last night. Mrs. McCarthy occupied three rooms in Mr. McDADE's house on Main St., near the head of Sheriff St. The neighbors had not noticed her about for a couple of days and at 8 o'clock informed Police Officer Burchill of the fact. Capt. Hastings and Officer Berchard visited the house and broke open the door. They found the body of Mrs. McCarthy in the inner bedroom on the floor, dead. The woman was lying on her back with her feet towards the bed. She was dressed in her usual clothing which were very poor and scant. The body was frozen stiff though it was not apparent that death was caused by the cold. There was plenty of food and fuel about the house and some money was found also. The fire in the stove was all laid and the coal ready for lightin, and that with the fact that a man named SCOTT, one of the neighbors, saw her lift one of her blinds about 9 o'clock on Thursday morn., leads to the belief that death occurred on Thursday before noon. Coroner Berryman was notified and at once visited the premises. He laid the body out on a sofa and locked the house up. It is likely an inquest will be held in the North End police station tonight. Rev. Fr. Hayden was also notified and stated that he would take charge of the body after the inquest. The woman was about 65 years of age and lived alone. A niece named Ellen COLLINS formerly lived with her but left some time ago. It is said the woman was the owner of some money which is in the hands of Father Hayden, the remainder of $880 which she received a year or two ago for a house on Main Street and to Mr. Foley.
