St. Paul's Church, Lakeside (Kings Co.) was probably erected in 1810 and cost the neighborhood of 600 pounds. The site and the ground occupied by its surrounding graveyard were the gift of John DEMILL and James CRAWFORD. The first wardens and vestry were chosen April 5, 1812. The wardens were Gabriel FOWLER and Rulof RULOFSON; the vestry were Azor HOYT, John DEMILL, William FROST, sr., Samuel SMITH, Salyer MORRILL, Ebenezer SMITH, Caleb WETMORE, Stent RAYMOND, Henry FOWLER, Joshua UPHAM, Wm KETCHUM, sr and Henry WANNEMAKER; clerk, Daniel MICHeau. Rev. Elias SCOVIL of Kingston held service in the church until the arrival of Rev. James COOKSON from England in 1819. He tok part of St. Paul's in June of that year. It may be that the records previous to 1819 are lost. The first baptism on record is that of James Henry FROST infant s/o William FROST and Anne FROST, Aug. 1, 1819. The first marriage on the register is that of John ROBERTS and Elizabeth VINCENT, Nov. 4, 1819. The first burial record is that of Frances Sarah FAIRWEATHER, Sept. 12, 1819. On 18th July 1826, the church and burial ground were consecrated by the Bishop of Nova Scotia. Mr. Cookson was suceeded in 1829 by Rev. William W. WALKER, who had charge until 1883, when he resigned on account of failing health and Rev. O.S. NEWNHAM was chosen rector of Hampton. In 1870-71, a new building was erected on the old foundation from the plans prepared by the late Col. Andrew OTTY. The church has seven beautiful memorial windows, the centre one in the chancel being placed there to the memory of Rev. Canon Walker. Directly under this window on the east side of the church are the graves of Rev. Canon Walker, his wife Anne and his mother, Pheobe WALKER / relict of / Thomas WALKER, Esquire / of Annapolis Royal, / and daughter of the late Colonel MILLIDGE / of Granville, N.S. / Obt. April 18th, 1846 / Aged 75 years. The grave is shaded by a gigantic weeping birch, it is said, was brought from Nova Scotia many years ago. On the right side of this grave rests the remains of Mrs. Margaret SIMONDS. The side windows in the chancel are inscribed as follows: In memory of Capt. T. Allen OTTY, R.N., Obt. 18th March, aged 74 years And Mrs. Otty, Obt. 7th August 1852, aged 54 -- In Memory of Thoams J. OTTY, R.N., Obit. 20th December 1847, aged 22; Elizabeth OTTY, Obt. 20th March 1874,aged 42. - The south windows are: In loving memory of George OTTY, born Aug. 8th, A.D. 1820; died November 14th, A.D. 1858, - The following is inscribed on a brass plate underneath: In memory of the late G.O.D. OTTY. In memory of Ada Louisa OTTY who died 25th April 1878 and is buried in the vault of this churchyard. - In memory of Sylvester Zobieski EARLE, jr., M.D., born August 7th, 1822; died March 1st, 1888 - On a brass plate underneath is this inscription: In memory of his two sons, Frederick Augustus EARLE and Manners Sutton EARLE. - The west windows bear the following inscriptions: In memory of Hon. Richard SIMONDS who died May 2nd, 1836, aged 47 years. - In memory of Pheobe WALKER died April 18th, A.D., 1846, aged 75 years and her son, Thomas Millidge WALKER, lost at sea, December 28th, A.D., 1834. - St. Paul's burial ground contains many graves of a very early date. I quote a few inscriptions that atracted my attention during my brief visit. The Crawford lot contains a single white marble monument bearing the following inscriptions: In memory of / William CRAWFORD / Died October 3rd, 1817 / aged 83 years / Mary CRAWFORD, his wife / Died October 10th, 1805 / agedn 62 years - In memory of James CRAWFORD / Died February 21, 1842 / aged 62 years / Catherine CRAWFORD / his wife / Died July 31st, 1858 / Aged 85 years / John CRAWFORD / Died September 1st, 1882 / Aged 23 years / Samuel CRAWFORD / Died October 21st / Aged 34 years / Sons of the above. - William CRAWFORD / Died December 17th, 1877 / Aged 74 years and 11 months / J. Heber CRAWFORD / Died July 11, 1870 / Aged 11 years / Son of the above. - Nearby repose the remains of the Hon. J. Herbert CRAWFORD, his mother and two brothers, and in the immediate vicinity those of John FRITCH and Catherine FRITCH, who came to this country with the Loyalists and settled on the Kennebecasis at a place formerly known as Dutch Point. The Otty family vault was pointed out to me in the northwest corner of the burial ground where it was almost hidden by weeping willow and other tress. - Sacred / to the memory of / Captain John FORD / who departed this life on the 23rd day of February in the year of our Lord 1823 and the 77th year of his age. He was born in November 1746 in the colony of New Jersey and out of loyalty to his king in 1777 abandoned all his possessions, and in 1873 emigrated to this province which was then a wilderness. - In memory of John DEMILL who departed this life 18th January 1825 in the 67th year of his age. - There are also monuments to Ebenezer SMITH, Esquire and his wife Susannah SMITH; Isaiah SMITH and his wife Charity SMITH; Azor HOYT, Esquire and his wife Hannah HOYT; and Capt. John HOWARD and his wife Palmena HOWARD, aged 81 and 91 years respectively. A beautiful granite monument marks the grave of Sylvester Zobieski Earle which is surrounded by many of his family. The only whimsical inscription which I found in St. Paul's burying ground is that over the grave of William SPENCE, which it is said was written by himself: Here lieth the body of / William Spence / In North Britain born / 74 years since.
