Fredericton, July 31 - On Saturday afternoon a most tragic occurrence took place a short distance from the city. Between and 5 o'clock Maggie CHESTNUT d/o H. CHESTNUT, Esq., hardware merchant and Nellie RANDOLPH d/o Hon. A.F. RANDOLPH, age 12 and 11 years respectively, went in bathing at Berry Hill above Fredericton on the left bank of the river. While in bathing they were carefully watched by the wife of John BABBITT, jeweller, who sat in a scow close at hand. Suddenly the two girls, who were wading in shadow water, plunged into a deep hole and disappeared from sight. Mrs. Babbitt plunged into the water to rescue the children. Fortunately Miss Randolph succeeded in obtaining a foothold on a rock which bordered on the hole and clambered out in safety. Locked in each other's arms, Miss Chestnut and the heroic woman struggling, sank. This Monday morning at 9 o'clock the remains of Miss Chestnut were interred at Spring Hill; the funeral of Mrs. Babbitt, whose body was taken to the city, will take place this afternoon at 3 o'clock.
