Three employees in the Custom House received quite a surprise at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. John HUMPHREY, waiter and searcher, who has been in the service 33 years, was notified by Collector Ruel that he had been retired on July 12th and that his superannuation allowance would be $575 per year. He had a salary of $900 per annum. James BARBER, surveying of shipping, received a like notice from Mr. Ruel. His salary was $1200 per annum and he retires on an allowance of $744. Mr. Barber has been in the custom service 31 years. The other gentleman who received his go card was Harry HUNT who has been in the customs something over 20 years. He was in the receipt of $650 per year and is retired on the small sum of $240.00.
