Major James Peters EWING of Royal Artillery, died 7th April at Territet, Montreux, age 45. The deceased officer was adjutant of the 9th brigade, North Irish Division, Londonderry militia. He entered the Royal Artillery as Lt. in 1864, was made captain in 1877 and major in 1883. Major Ewing was a great grandson of Sheriff WHITE, one of the first settlers of this Province who received large grants of land in Portland about 1770. Sheriff White's eldest daughter, Susannah WHITE married James PETERS, eldest s/o Valentine PETERS. Their youngest child, Margaret PETERS married Patrick EWING, now living in Belfast, Ireland, whose son was Major Ewing. The deceased leaves many distant connections in this province, among whom are Howe, Millidge, Robinson, Wetmore and Hubbard families. He had been ill about two years before his death, his ailment being caused, it is thought, by blood poisoning. He leaves a widow and three children, two sons and one daughter.
