Reminiscences of the Past - History of Saint John (see original) I remember the first vehichle that ever conveyed passengers from St. John to Indiantown for hire. It was put on the route about 47 years ago by William WILLIAMS, who is still a resident of Portland. It was a lumbering affair seating from 15 to 20 people and so heavy that the inmates were frquently compelled to walk up the hills. ... The fare in those days from Market Square to Indiantown was one shilling, but double fare when a passenger was unusually hurried. At this time the coaches conveyed no baggage and Lawrence STIVERS put a baggage van on the route, which was afterwards driven for a time by James BROWN, now proprietor of the Lorne (Hotel). Mr. Williams also had stages on the route from St. John and St. George. Other parties made the business of conveying passengers between St. John and Fredericton. There were James HEWITT, Thomas GREEN and James WESTCOTT, but I remember when James BRADLEY carried the mail in a pair of saddle bags to Fredericton, by the way of Nerepis in the summer and over the ice in the winter. ...
