Between 6 and 7 o'clock last eve., two lads, Willie BREEN and James MILLER, were seen together on a floating cake of ice, paddling around in Lower Cove slip (St. John) They had only been enjoying the sport a short time when the ice parted in the middle and both fell into the water which was about ten feet deep. The accident was witnessed by Hugh DOHERTY who gave an alarm. Miller floundered about in the water a short time, but succeeded in getting to shore while his companion disappeared before his eyes. Among those who rushed to the rescue of the lads was Charles KING. He procured a boat hook from his home and immediately began searching for the body of young Breen. In a few minutes he pulled the lad out amid the rejoicing of the crowd on the wharf, who hoped that life was not extinct. Efforts were made to restore amination by rolling the body on a barrell, but they proved unavailing. The remains were taken to the home of the lad's stepfather, John SMALL who keeps a tavern on Germain street near Brittain.
