Saved from Death's Jaws - Late on Sunday forenoon, Mrs. HUMPHREYS with her little son and daughter, started out from the Straight Shore, Portland in a boat in charge of Thomas HAINES, a resident of Main St., Portland. It is stated that he rowed immediately to Carleton and procured a bottle of rum and that he and the woman imbibed rather freely. About 1 o'clock in the afternoon, George BATTERSBY and Andrew FOLLIARD, employees of the Straight Shore Rolling Mills. When they got near the falls it was slack tide and the water was running up fearfully. They noticed a boat on the Carleton side within a few yards of a violent looking whirlpool. They heard cries for help from someone in the boat, and immediately started for the rescue. They had a hard pull and came near being carried under the Suspension Bridge several times. They finally reached the boat and found it contained Haines, Mrs. Humphrey and her children. One of the latter had fallen overboard and narrowly escaped with its life. Haines was lying in the stern of the boat. He was totally helpless, his condition being occasioned by drink. (see original)
