Capt. Charles THOMAS who died of heart disease in his 61st year at Sutton, Chester, England was a native of Saint John. He sailed from Saint John as second mate of the "Teal", Capt. GRAY in 1849 for San Francisco. He commanded the first steel ship built in England, in the Indian trade and afterwards several of the National Line between Liverpool and London and New York, during which time he was presented by the French and Americans with souvenirs, for saving the lives of some 700 passengers, without the loss of a single life, from the ill fated steamer "Amerique". Having earned a handsome competency, he retired a few years ago to a rural life. Capt. Thomas leaves a widow in England and two brothers in this city. he visited Saint John about ten years ago.
