The Old Graveyard, St. John ... One of the stones which lies nears the monument the reporter could decipher the following: 'This stone was erected by John TAYLOR and marks the spot where he placed the ashes of his mother, Ann TAYLOR'. The stone no doubt bore the day of her death etc., but the letters could not be made out. On another stone was the following 'To the memory of Jas. HARTT, a native of Scotland, who departed this life, 1813'. On another broken shaft can be seen the following: 'In memory of Mr. Thomas CLARK, who was a member of the staff of surgeons to His Majesty's forces, who departed this life Nov. 28th, 1815. This stone was erected by his wife, Frances CLARK' On still another shattered piece of granite the reporter was able to decipher the following: 'Beneath this stone lies the body of Walter CHALONER, Esq., formerly High Sheriff in the colony of Rhode Island and afterwards one of His Majesty's justices of peace in the County of Kings, New Brunswick. He departed this life Nov. 1796.' The names of his wife and other members of the family are on the stone.
