Death has closed the earthly career of Jas. HARRIS, successful foundryman in this community. For the past few years the deceased gentleman retired from active business owinf to his advanced years. His death, which occurred 4 o'clock yesterday morn., was no surprise to his friends. Deceased was the chief member of the firm James Harris & Co., whose extensive foundry and car building establishment on Paradise Row, Portland (St. John) was well known. Mr. Harris was born in Annapolis, N.S. in 1803 and came to this city when a young man, Some times afterwards he entered partnership with Thomas ALLAN and carried on a stove and tinware establishment on Portland Bridge. Their business developed to such an extent that more spacious quarters were required and in 1831, on the present site of the works, the foundry was erected. For a number of years an extensive business was done in stoves and agricultural machinery. Mr. Allan died in 1860 and his interest in the company was purchased by Mr. Harris. James C. ROBERTSON, son-in-law of Mr. Harris, was admitted into partnership a year or two ago, and during Mr. Harris' illness has been managing the company. The present works covers five acres. The Straight Shore rolling mills are also owned and operated by Mr. Harris & Co. The deceased has been a consistent member of the Portland Methodist church for a number of years. In Nov. 1886 he and his wife celebrated the 50th anniversary of their wedded life. Mrs. Harris died about a year ago.
