Dr. Lawrence MacLAREN died at his residence Charlotte street, Thursday morn. He was one of the oldest surgeons of New Brunswick. Dr. MacLaren was a native of P.E.I. He studied medicine in Charlottetown with Dr. MacKINTOSH and afterwards in Edinburgh, Scotland at the Royal College of Surgeons. There he was under the tuition of Legais and other celebrated teachers. After completing his studies in Edinburgh, he returned to Charlottetown and practiced for a short time on the Island. He then came to Richibucto (Kent Co.) and for a number years was medical king of the North Shore and became favorably known as a most skilfull surgeon. He is credited with performing the first successful lithotomy in this province. In 1865 he came to St. John. Here is was at one time senior surgeon of the staff of the General Public Hospital. He practiced actively up to about two years ago when his health began to fail him, so that his son, Dr. Murray MacLAREN assisted and took part of his practice. He was about 75 years of age and leaves a wife, five daughters and four sons. One of his daughters is married and living in Totonto, Ontario. His sons are: John S. MacLAREN, Inspector of Customs; David MacLAREN and Lawrence MacLAREN of firm Farnsworth & Jardine, Liverpool, England and Dr. Murray MacLAREN. (see original)
