The 'Century' for August contains an exhaustive sketch of William Lloyd GARRISON, the father of Universal freedom in America. His grandfather, Joseph GARRISON was granted a tract of land in Maugerville (Sunbury Co.) in 1765 and on 14th August 1784, he was married to Mary PALMER d/o Daniel PALMER who emigrated from Rowley, Mass. to Maugerville some time previous. Joseph and Mary Garrison reared nine children, the fifth of whom, Abijah GARRISON was the father of the man who was so largely instrumental in the abolition of American slavery. Joseph Garrison died at Jemseg in 1783 and his wife, Mary Palmer Garrison died at the same place in 1822, where she was residing with her son Silas GARRISON on the place known as the Garrison homestead to this day. Abijah Garrison, on one of his coasting voyages met Frances Maria LLOYD at Deer Island and married her at Campobello (Charlotte Co.) about the beginning of the present century. It is supposed that Abijah Garrison for a time after his marriage, resided with his relatives at Jemseg. In 1801 he was settled on Duke St., Saint John; afterwards he resided in Granville, N.S. and in the spring of 1805 he removed to Newburyport, Mass. where Wm Lloyd Garrison was born on the 10th dayof December following. Mrs. Garrison was deserted by her husband soon after his birth. (see original for career of William Lloyd Garrison)
