News of the death of Charles R. COKER, late Inspector of Hulls, was heard with regret by his friends. Mr. Coker has been ill for some time at the General Public Hospital and died about 9 o'clock Thursday eve. He was a native of Portsmouth, England and was 68 years of age. He first came to St. John in 1854 as assistant with John TUCKER, the English Lloyd's surveyor. After about a year's residence, he was removed to Charlottetown and for 10 or 12 years was Lloyd's representative in the Island district. From there he went to Quebec as agent for the Quebec and Ontario district. When Mr. Tucker retired, Mr. Coker was sent back to St. John and since then the city has been practically his home. After a few years Lloyd's withdrew their agency and Mr. Coker was supannuated. Shortly after he was appointed Inspector of Hulls for the Maritime Provinces and filled the position for about 12 years, resigning in November last. He had contemplated a trip to England where two sisters reside and a visit to California where are another sister and a brother. In politics he was a Conservative and on very friendly terms with the late Sir John A. MacDonald. The funeral will be at Trinity Church tomorrow afternoon. (see original)
