An Old Man's Recollections of Fifty Years Ago - Old Landmarks, Old Residents - Disasters and Other Events - (sgd) T., Annapolis Co., 19th April, 1876: ... Running west from this was a small wharf owned by the late Craven CALVERLY, Esq. who was doing business in Lower Cove and owned two brigs, the "Robert" and the other the "Peggy" ... The first funeral I have any recollection was a Mrs. BEARD who lived not far from where the barracks now stand and at that time (1814) funerals were few and far between ... I was born in the city before it was 26 years old and have a vivid collection of the old inhabitants living in Lower Cove (St. John) and could point out their place of then residents. Among others were John CLARKE, baker. John PAUL, Thos. SANDALL, Obediah PURDY, Robert ROBERTSON, Thomas SANCTON, Craven CAVERLY, Michael PARTELOW, Harry ANTHONY, Hiram BETTS, Bartholomew COXETTER, Dr. Nathan SMITH, __ REED, King's Pilot, John DAY, James HANCOCK, Matthew PARTELOW, __ JORDAN, Gregory VANHORNE, Tyler DIBBLEE and old Ned BURR, the old grave digger. ... The only persons living on (Queen Square) Samuel SMILER and James COLLARD and on the northeast corner __ KELLY, the bell man or Town Crier, hence the hill is called Kelly's Hill. ... It was in the year 1820 that the eldest son of Thomas SANCTON, Esq., Chamberlain of the City, was killed by falling from a horse on Horsfield St. ... (see original)
