William JACK, Q.C., one of the oldest residents of St. John died yesterday afternoon at his residence on Wright St., Portland. He was Advocate General for New Brunswick. Mr. Jack was born in St. Andrews (Charlotte Co.) in 1811 and was the s/o David JACK, collector of Customs at that port. He received his early education at the grammar school, St. Andrews. He studied law in the office of Neville PARKER, Master of the Rolls. He passed his attorney examinations Oct. 15th, 1834. A year later he was made a barrister. He practiced at St. George for a few years and then removed to St. John and entered partnership with Mr. Parker, with whom her remained until the latter was elevated to the Bench. Shortly after he came to Saint John some 50 years ago, he married Emma Carleton KENAH d/o Capt. KENAH and granddaughter of Hon. Isaac ALLEN, one of the first Judges of the Supreme Court and grandfather of the present Chief Justice ALLEN. After the elevation of his partner, Melville PARKER to the Banch, Mr. Jack carried on hi law business alone. He was one of the corporators of St. John Mechanics Institute. He was appointed master in chancery and held that office the year 1854 when it was abolished. He was director of the Rural Cemetery and for some time director of the Commercial Bank. He was director of the St. John Gas Co. and one of the Commissioners of the Provincial Lunatic Asylum. He leaves a widow and nine children, two sons and seven daughters. One of the former is I. Allen JACK, recorder of the city of Saint John. The other, William, is residing in New York. His eldest d/o married Dr. Thomas WALKER. Another, Mrs. W.W. STREET is residing in New York and another married Roderick MacKENZIE, manager of Bank of Montreal in Cornwall, Ontario. He has four daughters unmarried, two of whom are in the States and two at home.
