Halifax, N.S., Aug. 23 - Information is to hand that the steamer "Dorcas" and the coal barge "Etta Stewart" were both cast away on Shutin Island, ten miles east of the entrance to Halifax harbor during Monday night's gale. Not a soul survived to tell the take of the wreck. The "Dorcas and the "Etta Stewart" are owned by S. Cunard & Co. of Halifax and left Sydney on Saturday and were due here on Monday afternoon. The steamer carried a crew of five and the barge seven. Besides the crews they must have been others taken on board, probably the wives and children of some of the crew and maybe passengers. This morn. 14 bodies of the 24 who were lost had been recovered. Capt. Angus FERGUSON of the "Dorcas" and those of the two ladies are among those cast ashore. The list of those on board were: Capt. Ferguson, Louisburg; H. McDONALD, mate, Louisburg; James MacDONALD, A.B., Louisburg; John T. SHARP, A.B., Weymouth; Benjamin BOOM, A.B., Louisburg; Norman McCURRY, cook, Louisburg; Alex. McVICAR, A.B., Louisburg; William HANNAH, chief engineer, his wife and three children; Sadie MUSGROVE, Sydney; D. KENNEDY, fireman, Louisburg; William McCANN, fireman, Halifax; A. TARQUAY, second engineer, formerly of Quebec, now of Halifax. Those on the barge were as follows: Capt. SPENCER, Louisburg; Wm PRICE, mate, Louisburg, formerly captain of the schooner; P. WALSH, McVICAR, George KELLY, Jas. KELLY, A. McDONALD, Norman McCASKILL, seamen of Louisburg; David BALDWIN, cook, Louisburg. (see original)
