Alfred REED, formerly of Hopewell (Albert Co.) but now of Gardiner City, Douglas County, Oregon, is in the city and staying at Elliott's Hotel. Mr. Reed has prospered in the world since his removal to the Pacific coast 25 years ago. He is a large owner of land with a ranch of some 500 head of cattle and raised about 140 tons of grapes last year. He also owns a fish canning establishment in which some 3,000 salmon are handled daily on the averahe during the season. He also has a steamer on the Umpqua river and is otherwise interested in shipping. Mr. Reed has been a representative in the Oregon state legislature. On his visit he is accompanied by his wife, formerly Miss STARRATT of Albert Co. They intend returning to the west by the C.P.R. Monday next.
