About 10 o'clock Tuesday morn., one of the boiler's of Mr. PETRIE's Mill on the Straight Shore exploded carrying a mass of brick work a considerable distance. The firemen had just left, but four of the workmen, Thomas GALLAGHER (who came out from Ireland this summer), Patrick CANAN, Daniel MURRAY, and Andrew HARRIGAN and Michael MURPHY, a mason, who were standing, it is said, some 30 feet away, Mr. MURPHY being at work at the boiler, were so dreadfully scalded by the rush of steam that MURPHY died on Tuesday afternoon and MURRAY on Wednesday. Little hopes are entertained of CANAN's recovery. The explosion is supposed to have been caused by a defect in the flue. (see entry #1013)
