On 19th June 1843, militia orders were issued to the effect that the Commander in Chief was pleased to appoint the following officers to the New Rifle Company, then forming from the 1st Batt. York Co. Militia. Lt. John SIMPSON, to be captain; Lt. S.D. McPHERSON to be 1st Lt.; William WATTS, jr., Gentleman to be 2nd Lt. This company was made up of a strength of 64. The first General Inspection appears from the orderly book to have been 29th July 1844 on which day there were nine absentees. The last general inspection took place on 25th Sept. 1849 on which there were only 24 men on parade, 10 had left the Province, 15 were in the city but absent, one was sick and the company roll was 14 deficient in strength. On 13th June 1860 Capt. John Simpson delivered up all the arms and accoutrements to Lt. Col. Hayne, A.G.M. and so ended the military life of No. 2 Rifle Company 1st Batt. York Militia.
