The Old Loyalist Cemetery, or as it is locally known 'The Burial Hill' at French Village, Kings Co., is perhaps the oldest interment place in the province of New Brunswick still in use for the burial of the dead. The situation of this spot is most pictureaque, crowning as it does the top of a hill or bluff, around the base of which sweeps in a graceful curve the waters of the Hammond River. Below is given a few of the most interesting epitaphs: Erected by Justus S. WETMORE, 1861. In memory of his father, James WETMORE of Rye, State of New York, born Dec. 18, 1727, died at Hampton, Kings Co., N.B., Feb. 14, 1798; also his wife, Elizabeth WETMORE born N.Y. March 15, 1730, died at Hampton, K.C., Dec. 19, 1808 and his G.Mother Sarah SHERWOOD wife of Justud SHERWOOD, born at N.Y., April 3, 1741, died at Springfield, Kings Co., N.B., March, 1794 and his mother, Ruth WETMORE daughter of Justus and Sarah Sherwood and wife of David Brown WETMORE born N.Y. Jan. 11, 1769, died at Hampton, Kings Co., N.B., Jan. 6, 1794. All buried here. - Sacred to the memory of Richard Curry SHERWOOD, who departed this life Dec. 3rd, 1851, in the 77th year of his age, born in the State of New York, Aug. 10th, 1775, emigrated with the Loyalists to this province in 1783 and settled with his father in the parish of Hampton where he continued up to the time of his death. - In memory of Henry FOWLER who departed this life Feb. 22nd, 1843, aged 87 years; In memory of Betty FOWLER wife of Henry Fowler, who departed this life 27th July 1835, aged 72 years 1 month 5 days. - In memory of Humphrey BULL, who departed this life Oct. 7th, 1845, aged 77 years 8 months 2 days. - In memory of Mrs. Rache BULL, the wife of Humphrey Bull, who departed this life Jan. 29th, 1844, aged 66 years 2 mos. 4 days. - Here lies the body of Mima B. PICKEL died July 18, 1812, aged 19 months. This last is carved upon a common sandstone slab, yet it remains a standing witness of the love of the one who placed it there for the little one whose epitaph it bears. .. Unfortunately no public record was ever kept of those who were buried here, so it is impossible at this late date to get a correct list of their names. With the opening of the Baptist and Episcopal churchyards, the Burial Hill fell into disuse and for many years was greatly neglected. A new interest was awakened in the year 1888 when John WANAMAKE of Apohaqui, in conveying his interest in the Bull estate to Mr. Smith reserved the Burial Hill as a free public cemetery.
