The death of Jos. E. COLLINS, formerly editor of the 'Star', Chatham, took place at New York, 23rd Feb. from kidney trouble, age 35. He was born at Placentia, Nfld. and received a good education. On leaving school he served two years on the mounted police at St. John's and in 1874 came to New Brunswick. For a time he worked on the farm of the late R.E. McLEOD of Kings Co and later taught school in Queensbury (York Co.) and Fredericton. He abandoned the teaching profession and for a time studied law with Allen and Wilson and then embarked in the newspaper business, publishing the Fredericton 'Star'. The paper was not a financial success and he moved to Chatham and continued publication of the 'Star' there. In 1881, Mr. Collins went to Toronto and did some literary and newspaper work. 'Canada Under the Administration of Lord Lorne', 'Life and Times of Sir John Macdonald', 'A Short Sketch of the Life of Lord Lansdowne' and other works were written by Mr. Collin and published by the Rose Publishing Co., Toronto. He went to New York in 1886 to assist in the editing of the 'Epoch' and after the retirement of Nathan Haskell Dole became its managing editor. He resigned in 1888 to take charge of a newspaper syndicate. In 1881, while living in Fredericton, Mr. Collins was married to Gertrude Anna MURPHY d/o Dr. J.N. MURPHY, who survives him.
