Charles Hayes is about 35 years of age and was born at Sand Cove, Carleton (St. John) on a piece of property now owned by Senator Lewin. He is one of eight children, six of whom are males. Their names were Mathias HAYES, Henry HAYES, Charles HAYES, Albert HAYES, David HAYES and Edward HAYES. There were two girls, one of whom is dead; the other one is married and resides in Boston. All the sons live in the U.S., except Henry who resides near the Tower at Lancaster and Albert who lives with his parents at Grand Bay (Kings Co.) His father, Samuel HAYES is a respectable citizen, having a good farm at Grand Bay. When a very young man, Charles married Mary Ann LYONS who lived up the St. John River and took her to Carleton to reside. They resided in an old house on Duke St. About a year after their marriage, the woman died. Before many months had elapsed Hayes married Elizabeth BAILEY, a sister of Jesse BAILEY of Carleton, better known as Jesse WILLIAMS. He took his second wife to live behind the Tower at Lancaster.
