To Editor of the 'Freeman' from William CLIFFORD, Coroner, Grand Falls (Victoria Co.) June 15th, 1867 - " ... According to information received about the 4th or 5th day of the present month, J. RYAN, a young man in the employ of Charles CLAYTON of Masardis, Maine, while river driving, was drowned. The body was by two Frenchmen who haveing made a rough coffin, buried the body as they found it with clothes etc. on an islnd convenient to where the accident happened. (nine miles distant from Grand Falls on St. John River) The occurence having taken place in American waters, I consider it without my jurisdiction and consequently held no inquest, but I gave directions to my informants to have the body disinterred and divested of the clothes, &c., suitable linens provided, and have it reinterred which was accordingly done. The body now lies in the private burial ground of Mr. COMBS who kindly consented to have it removed tither. The expenses incurred will no doubt be borne by Mr. CLAYTON, the bill of which I have already recommended to be paid as rendered. The deceased is supposedly a native of Kings or Westmorland County.
