Letter by A. ESTABROOKS: In the year 1856 the Home Mission Board of N.B. sent Mr. GOOLDRUP on a mission to St. Francis (Madawaska Co.) There was no suitable place of worship, but he was encouraged to hold a meeting at Jesse WHEELOCK's house. His mission of a few weeks was extended to several months. In the autumn following Isaiah WALLACE, Gilbert SPRINGER and George RIGBY visited St. Francis. Two of them still remain with us. the following winter, T.H. PORTER visited St. Francis. He was then a colporteur and just beginning to preach. The next Baptist preacher after Mr. Porter, I am informed, was Stepehen MARCH in response to the Macedonia cry which about that time came to the Baptists through the columns of the 'Christian Visitor'. This was uttered by Caleb THROMB, a resident of St. Francis at that time, but now living at Fort Fairfield, Maine. In March 1856, Bro. March arrived and on 5th July following was ordained pastor of the church which was organized at the time of the baptism of the six persons above referred to. Bro. March was ordained by Rev. Thomas Todd and George Rigby assisted by Mr. Duval. His pastorate continued about two years during which time he baptized eight persons. After his resignation he married Miss Elizabeth KEATING, a member of the St. Francis Church. (abridged) (continued 7 Nov. 1883)
