The death of Thomas DOBSON, late sgt. of St. John police force took place at his residence on Mecklenburg Street, Saturday morn. He had reached the advanced age of 76 years. He had been sick for some time and his death was not unexpected. His appointment to the police force dates back almost to the day when the force was organized. Previous to 1849, the city was protected in the daytime by constables and at night by night watchmen. In that year a Chief of Police, captain, five sergeants and twenty men were provided for by the passage of the new act. Two months after the Act was passed, or Oct. 15, 1849, Mr. Dobson was appointed. His sergeant's commission was dated Dec. 11, 1857. He served under four different chiefs during his 34 years of work and finally, in Dec. 1883, resigned on account of advancing years and feeble health. He had the lion's share to do in the tracing of the murderers of Cotter, Spencer and McKenzie and it was he who caught the robbers of the Fredericton Central bank. Sgt. Dobson was of Irish descent. He had long been a member of the St. John Presbyterian Church.
