In 1836, the late Michael S. HARRIS, a native of Annapolis, N.S. removed with his family to the Bend. (Moncton). For a time he lived in St. John and afterwards at Norton, where he was engaged in business as a carriage maker. Michael S. Harris engaged in lumbering and shipbuilding at the Bend and from 1840 to 1862 carried on an extensive business, send many ships and cargoes of lumber to the British market, which he visited in the interests of his trade. Mr. Harris built quite a number of large vessels, and his sons, John L. HARRIS and C.P. HARRIS, also were engaged for a short time in shipbuilding. He was a magistrate and held for some years the office of deputy sheriff of the county. In 1859 he was elected Mayor of Moncton. He did much to develop the resources of the rising town, and on his death, Jan. 26th, 1866, caused widespread and severe regret. Mr. Harris married in 1826, Sarah Ann TROOP of Annapolis and to them were born seven children as follows: Jane HARRIS, wife of John A. HUMPHREY, ex. M.P.P.; George HARRIS, deceased; Eliza COCHRANE, wife of Robert COCHRANE, Moncton; John L., C.P. and Joseph A. HARRIS, resident in Moncton; and Isabel HARRIS wife of J.S. COWIE, Moncton. Thus all living members of the family live in the immediate vicinity of the homestead. (see original)
