A murder occurred at Paddy's Flat, Fairville (St. John) about 5:30 o'clock Monday morn. The murderer was Asa Gilford CRAWFORD and the victim John Henry BRANTOM, an Englishman. ... John Henry Brantom came to Fairville last may from Pennsylvania where he had worked in the coal mines. He was a native of Kirkfield, near York, Yorkshire, England and was about 22 years of age. He had no relatives here, but a brother in Pennsylvania with whom he corresponded regularly. His intentions were to have gone back to Pennsylania next spring. Crawford was born at Kingston (Kings Co.) in 1850. He lived afterwards at Kierstead's Mountain and came to the North End about two years ago. On the first of last May he moved to Fairville and has since lived in the house in Mooney's brickyard at Paddy's Flat. Witnesses: Hartley CRAWFORD, son of the murderer; Charles ARBO of Milford, brother-in-law of the murderer: Crawford was married to my sister-in-law, Adelia KELLY at Studholm, 21 or 22 years ago. They have three children living, one dead. Mrs. Crawford is a d/o late Geo. KELLY. Crawford worked lately about Randolph & Baker's mill and before that he was employed about the brickyard; William HINES was interviewed last eve. at his home near the Crawford residence.
