In the list of grantees at Parr Town, 1783, occurs the name of Henry DYER. One hundred years before this a person of the same name lived in Monmouth Co., N.J. He was the son of William DYER who was colonial secretary of Rhode Island and held other important positions. He and his wife, Mary DYER had children: William DYER, Henry DYER, Charles DYER and one with a fearfully long name, Mahershalalhashbar DYER - a scripture from Isaiah viii chap. The mother, Mary DYER, was the unfortunate lady whose sad fate on Boston Common resulted Charles II putting an end to the severe persecution of the Quakers. The founder of the family seems to have spelled his name both DYER and DYRE. (Ancestry of the First Families of St. John, N.B. by Edwin Salter, Washington, D.C.)
