John JOHNSON, age 10 was starved and frozen to death near Gagetown (Queens Co.) Tuesday afternoon. His parents are of that class commonly supposed not to stand in need of charity; but nevertheless it is a class which this winter is silently suffering everything short of actual starvation. They raised no potatoes last summer and their buckwheat is already ground and eaten and even if they possess a cow or two, they cannot be converted into bread, neither can bread be obtained on credit. The above lad and an elder brother had been sent to a distant mill, in hopes of getting a little meal, but from weakness the younger was exhausted before he quite reached home. and although help was almost instantly obtained, he died from the pressure of the cold on a debilitated frame.
