Our popular representative belongs to one of the old and highly respected Loyalist families who can be traced back in the country's history for more than one hundred years. The subject of our sketch is the son of J.M. SCOVIL and Charlotte SCOVIL; was born at Springfield (Kings Co.) Aug. 15th, 1842; was educated at the Grammar School, Kingston amd subsequently entered upon a mercantile life which he has followed since. Mr. Scovil was one of the early volunteers and, as captain, attended the 30 days military drill at Torryburn. Of late years he has not taken a very active part in military matters, although he still holds a captain's commission. He has been a magistrate for many years and never had a liking for the active duties of the office. When this county was brought under the general Municipality Act, Mr. Scovil was elected one of the councillors from the parish of Springfield and was a representative of the Council Board until 1892 with but one exception and for that year he was not a candidate. He was Warden for a time. In October 1892 at the general provincial election, he, with Hon. A.S. White and Hon. G.H. Flewelling, contested this county in the interest of the Local government and along with then was triumphantly returned. He is a quiet unassuming man.
