Yesterday morn., 9:45 a.m., a dreadful accident took place on Princess St. (St. John) which resulted in the instant death of two men, while they were engaged in their ordinary avocations. The large house on Princess St. opposite the Savings Bank, which is occupied by Miss CHAPMAN as a boarding house was being painted, the contract for the work being given to Mr. BARBOUR ... Yesterday morn. at 7 o'clock, three of Mr. Barbour's painters, John KELLY, Philip F. ANLEY and Thomas H. STUBBS went to Princess St. to resume the painting at the front of the house ... Stubbs, whose nerves are not strong, found himself unable to proceed with his work and finally at 9:30 he got off the staging and went away ... The two other men, Kelly and Anley, went on with their work for fifteen minutes longer ... he heard a sharp crack ... for he saw the ladder had broken and he beheld those two men falling head first and beyond all help or hope from any man. Philip Anley was an Englishman about 41 years of age. He leaves a wife and three children, a girl of 5, a boy of 3 and a third about a year old. Anley resided in the upper part of Main St. near Wentworth St. (St. John). John Kelly s/o Mr. Kelly of the fish market, was about 35 years of age. He leaves a wife and four children, the oldest being a boy, 9 years of age, the second 5 years, the third a girl of 2 years and the youngest an infant only 4 mos. old. One of his sisters, quite a young girl, was killed some 14 years ago, by the falling of the masts of ship "Pilgrim" which then lay near the Custom House. Corner Earle held an inquest at 3 o'clock.
