In 1829 there were nine families living within the present city limits of Moncton. They were John HENDERSON, carpenter; Wm STEADMAN, farmer; James BEATTY, blacksmith; Malcolm WILMOT, J.P., stroe keeper; William HARPER, storekeeper; James KELLY and Robert PERRIGO, tavern keepers, Mr. GRANT and Mr. GESNER, farmers. In the same year William COOK settled there. Thomas PRINCE had a store in the place, but lived some distance from the village. The settlement at what are now called Lewisville and Humphrey's Mills was then nearly as important as that at the Bend.
