Hon. Abner Reid McCLELAN was born at Riverside (Albert Co.) January 1831. His father was Peter McCLELAN, Esq., J.P., Hopewell and his mother's maiden name was Lucy ROBINSON. Mr. McClelan was educated at Mount Allison academy, Sackville of which institution he was subsequently one of the governors. When a young man he joined the Liberal party, then led by Leonard Tilley. On June 24, 1854 Mr. McClelan was first elected to represent this county in the Legislative Assembly and was re-elected six times to the local legislature. He was a strong supporter of the treaty of that year which secured reciprocity with the U.S. He supported many railway projects, including the proposition to connect St. John and Shediac by rail. In 1876 he married Anna B. REID eldest d/o late William J. REID, Esq., Harvey Corner. His only brother now living is Thomas McCLELAN, one our most prosperous farmers. He has also one sister, Mrs. GILBERT, residing at Eau Claire, Wisconsin. (see original for political career)
