Located on the Salmon River, 1.85 km N of Coal Creek: Chipman Parish, Queens County: the location of the earliest coal mining in North America: PO 1846-1916: in 1866 Coal Mines was a farming and mining community with approximately 22 resident families: in 1871 the community and the surrounding district had a population of about 300: in 1898 Coal Mines had 1 post office and a population of 50.
