Loyalist Transport Vessel

Eagle

New York to Saint John, New Brunswick

September, 1783.

[The transport vessel 'Eagle' arrived at Saint John, New Brunswick, in September, 1783, carrying Capt. John Smith's militia company. The company included 73 men, 41 women, 63 children above age ten, and 63 children under that age, for a confirmed total of 240 persons. The only identified members of the company were Captain Smith and Lieutenants Thomas Treadwell Smith and Albert Van Nostrandt.

The vessel seems to be H.M.S. 'Eagle,' flagship of the Royal Navy.

While the list seems authentic, its history is murky; some forgotten correspondent provided a copy about twenty years ago, and the location of the source document is unknown. Checking that copy, on a name-by-name basis, permitted some corrections and an alphabetical sort of the passenger names. All else is cited as received, and the accuracy cannot be confirmed. - RWH]
