Standing portrait of Canon Edward S. Medley. – [1860s]. – 1 photograph : b&w ; 17.5 x 12.5 cm. Photographer unknown. Architect and cleric, Edward S. Medley was the son of Bishop John Medley and his first wife, Christiana Bacon. He studied for three years under British architect William Butterfield, being particularly attracted to the High Victorian Gothic style. Ordained a priest by his father in 1864, he served as Rector of Christ Church, St. Stephen, N. B. for seven years, returning to Britain in 1872 where he remained for the rest of his life. While in New Brunswick, he designed a number of Anglican churches which reflected his interpretation of Gothic Revival: All Saint’s, McKeen’s Corner; St. Mary the Virgin, New Maryland; Christ Church, St. Stephen; St. Paul’s, Upper Keswick; All Saints, Magaguadavic; and the Church of the Ascension, Apohaqui.
