Excerpt from James Brown’s diary. – 29 January 1861. – 2 pp. of textual records. A member of the Executive Council and surveyor general of New Brunswick, Brown notes that he and two of his fellow councillors, S. L. Tilley and David Wark, have favoured a government measure “for the encouragement of Emigration”, but states that their government “colleages were never in earnest, or willing to assist us, so all our endeavours, hitherto, have ended in words.” He now thinks that this attitude will change “by the force of public opinion.” MC295-MS2-10 James Brown diary, 1861-1862, PANB.
