During the course of this project, we have prepared publications in many forms, including the features available on our website. Our work has also appeared in books, journals, magazines, encyclopedia entries, newspaper articles, pamphlets and other forms.

  • Provincial Solidarities: A History of the New Brunswick Federation of Labour

    A pioneering study, written in clear and forceful prose, this is the untold story of provincial labour solidarities that succeeded in overcoming divisions and defeats to raise the status of working men and women within New Brunswick society.

  • "Le Madawaska: l'Acadie des terres et forêts"

    This article for the Encyclopédie du patrimoine culturel de l'Amérique française traces the history of the forest industry in Madawaska and demonstrates that the forest is at the heart of the region's cultural heritage. In French only.

  • Informing Public Policy: Socio-Economic and Historical Perspectives on Labour in New Brunswick

    An 84-page bilingual booklet summarizing the sessions at the 2009 conference Informing Public Policy: Socio-Economic and Historical Perspectives on Labour in New Brunswick. The presentations are summarized under several themes: "Why Unions?", "Public Policy and Labour", "Educating Labour", "Development in Acadie", "Forestry in New Brunswick" and "Nursing in New Brunswick." The booklet includes photographs taken by Oliver Flecknell in the course of the conference.

  • "Provincial Solidarities: The Early Years of the New Brunswick Federation of Labour, 1913-1929"

    The early history of the New Brunswick Federation of Labour, the oldest continuously existing federation of labour in Canada, is the subject of an article by David Frank in this issue of the Journal of the Canadian Historical Association (2008). The article identifies the importance of provincial federations of labour as a distinct form of labour organization which attempted to strengthen local bonds of solidarity and represent workers at the level of the provincial state.

  • "Le projet d'histoire du travail au Nouveau-Brunswick et la communauté du Madawaska: comment construire des partenariats durables"

    In this article in the Journal of Canadian Studies (2009) Nicole Lang assesses the partnerships created in Madawaska during the work of the New Brunswick Labour History Project. She presents examples of public activities and collaborative projects undertaken in the region thanks to partnerships with community organizations. She also analyses the impact of these activities and collaborative projects within the Madawaska community and discusses the lessons the research team is able to draw from these experiences.   • A Guide to Day of Mourning Monuments in New Brunswick

    This brochure published in 2009 introduces the monuments dedicated to the Day of Mourning for workers in the province. In addition to background information on each of the monuments, the brochure includes a map showing locations. It was prepared in collaboration with two of our partners, the New Brunswick Federation of Labour and the Canadian Labour Congress.

  • "No More 'Yes Girls': Labour Activism among New Brunswick Nurses, 1964-1981"

    This study by Linda Kealey, published in Acadiensis in 2008, focuses on three key moments in 1969, 1975 and 1980-81, which were turning points in the nurses' campaign to address low wages and poor working conditions, first within their professional association, the New Brunswick Association of Registered Nurses, and then through the New Brunswick Nurses' Union, established in 1978.

  • "Minto 1932: The Origins and Significance of a New Brunswick Labour Landmark"

    This detailed study, published in Acadiensis in 2007, examines the circumstances surrounding the death of three children and two miners in a local mine shaft in Minto on 28 July 1932 and the importance of the act of commemoration 50 years later. These events had a large impact on individuals and families as well as on the adoption of mine safety laws and the administration of workers' compensation in New Brunswick.

  • The Struggle against Wage Controls: The Saint John Story, 1975-1976

    In October 1976 one million Canadian workers walked off the job to protest the wage controls imposed by Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau. In this memorable personal account, Saint John labour activist George Vair recalls how workers in one New Brunswick city mobilized to defend themselves and their unions and defeat the unpopular program. George Vair's well-received book was prepared in collaboration with the project in 2006 and is now available online from the Canadian Committee on Labour History.     A short biography of James Sugrue, who was the first president of the New Brunswick Federation of Labour (1913-18). Published in 2005 by the Dictionary of Canadian Biography.
