Issues
Watergate (1972)
Watergate, the major political scandal of the Nixon administration, was set off on June 17, 1972 with the botched burglary and wiretapping of the Democratic Party’s campaign headquarters at the Watergate office and apartment complex in Washington, DC. Persistent investigation into the matter revealed that the espionage had been planned and funded by members of the administration, ultimately implicating many high-ranking government officials, including President Nixon himself. The reporters who uncovered the scandal relied heavily on a source known only as “Deep Throat”, who in 2005 revealed his identity as W. Mark Felt, the deputy director of the FBI at the time. The scandal resulted in the first resignation of a US president.
