Services

There is no fee to do research at the Provincial Archives. However, fees are charged for all reproductions, including textual documents, maps, photographs, and microfilmed items. Self-service photocopying is available. Staff will do a limited amount of copying in response to written requests, and provide certified copies of applicable documents.

The Archives participates in the interlibrary loan system. A substantial portion of the holdings has been microfilmed, and a researcher may borrow up to three reels of film at one time through a cooperating library. References to microfilmed sources will be supplied on request.

Staff provide suggestions and guidance to visiting researchers. Those embarking upon extensive projects are advised to contact the Archives in advance to determine the extent and nature of relevant holdings.

Ever increasing demands prevent staff from carrying out detailed research in response to written inquiries. For specific questions, staff will check indexed sources and will suggest options that a correspondent may wish to pursue.

Each year the Archives conducts many tours, workshops and orientation sessions. Hands-on experience and training are offered through the volunteer program. Technical assistance can generally be provided for heritage related activities, such as commemorative events, cultural festivals, and exhibits. Staff may be available to speak at meetings of groups and societies, and to visit their repositories.

The Archives provides technical and conservation assistance to other repositories, and supports the Council of Archives New Brunswick.

Regulations

Researchers complete a registration form on their first visit to the Archives, and sign the visitors' register daily.

Request slips are used to obtain documents for research. Material will be brought directly to the researcher at any time throughout the day.

Documents and reference works must be consulted in the Search Room and other designated areas; they may not be taken out on loan.

Restrictions may apply to both government and private records.

Archival documents are fragile! Handle them with care.
