The two plaques on the left hand side of the building are memorials to the war dead for World War I and World War II. The building was formerly the residence of Alexander Rankin, built in 1837 after his residence was lost due to fire. When Rankin died and Richard Hutchison became the resident partner of Gilmor, Rankin and Co., he occupied this house. It was Richard’s son, Ernest, who gave the building to become a school. Many an important visitor to the Miramichi was entertained here. The front of the house, not seen here, faces the river. A beautifully proportioned patio designed and built by William Murray, a notable Miramichi architect, was removed some years ago from the front.
