Abstract City of Saint John, St. John County. Kings County records. Will dated 4 January 1804, proved 8 May 1826. "Being . . . . in the sixty-first year of my age." Wife Sarah use of all real and personal estate for her use and support and the children under her care not yet provided for, Elizabeth, Caroline, Charles Edward and Maria. Daughters Sarah and Lucy and sons George, Henry and Richard each 5 shillings at the death of their mother. Son Henry Lots 14 and 17 on the north side of Salmon River in the Parish of Sussex, Kings County. Son Charles Edward "my House, Barns, stables, grainary, stores and out Houses at Sussex Vale in the County of Kings together with all my lands, improved and unimproved, on the south side of the Salmon River and also others in that County not before disposed of to his Brothers by Deed, with all my Books, pictures which have lately been brought from there to the House in Town, with the Globe, Thermometer and Barometer" allowing to his three unmarried sisters, Elizabeth, Caroline and Maria, £50 annually during their unmarried state. Daughters Elizabeth, Caroline and Maria the residue of estate, being the house in the City of Saint John and the lands annexed to it, with all my plate, household furniture, book debts and cattle except six cows, two oxen, twenty sheep and one horse to son Charles Edward with the farming utensils. In the event that son Charles Edward should die leaving no lawfull heirs of his body, son George to succeed him and take possession of all property bequeathed to Charles Edward, and after his death his son Thomas to succeed him. Daughters Elizabeth, Caroline and Maria what property I have in New England in the County of Bristol left me by the will of my father which has not been sold by me, also what I came possessed of by the death of my Brother Thomas LEONARD. Wife Sarah LEONARD, son George and daughter Elizabeth executors. Witnesses: Ward CHIPMAN, William F. ODELL, William S. OLIVER. CODICIL dated 10 November 1811. Bequeaths the estate at Sussex Vale one half to son Charles Edward, the other half to be divided between his two unmarried sisters, Elizabeth and Maria, and his brother Henry LEONARD with a large family of children, after deducting £200 for my daughter Caroline, now the wife of Mr. JARVIS, to make her equal to her married sisters Mrs. PARRY and Mrs. CODNER. Witnesses: Edward WINSLOW, Ward CHIPMAN, E. CHIPMAN. CODICIL 2 dated 18 January 1814. Grandson George Townsend PARRY, son of my oldest child and daughter Sarah, wife of Lieut. Colonel PARRY of the Royal Artillery, 250 acres of land in St. John County, in the neighbourhood of the City, lately granted to me. Grandson George Hector LEONARD, son of my son Charles Edward, the other 250 acres of the above grant, each to take possession at age 18. The sum of £200 previously bequeathed to daughter Caroline, wife of Mr. JARVIS, to be used for the education of grandson George Seymour JARVIS. Witnesses: Ward CHIPMAN, Ward CHIPMAN Junr., E. CHIPMAN. CODICIL 3 dated 14 September 1814. Daughter Maria now married to Lieutenant ROCHEFORT of the Royal Navy, she to receive £600 in annual payments of £100. Unmarried daughter Elizabeth to inherit what was intended for my daughter Maria as mentioned in my will and Codicil No. 1 of my real estate. Witnesses: David HATFIELD, Alex THOMSON, George LEONARD Junr. CODICIL 4 dated 30 December 1815 at Sussex Vale. Bequest to son Henry revoked and in lieu thereof £70 including the money paid to his acct. to the Revd. Mr. ARNOLD by my son George as I have taken upon myself to repay his [bond]. The remaining £50 to go to discharge a debt to Mr. VAIL for which he holds part of the land of my son Henry. Due to ill health of son George his executorship revoked and son Charles Edward appointed executor in his stead. Witnesses: Abel ENGLISH, Joseph LEE, [Elisa] [BERRY]. CODICIL 5 dated 21 June 1816. Having done what I conceived my duty to my son Henry and his Family by various aids and donations and £50 paid to redeem his land under mortgage to Robert VAIL having been discharged, the sum of £50 to my grandson George Thacher(sic), third son of Henry, at age 21. Son Henry no further claim on my estate, having given his son Carleton by deed Lot 14 on the north side of Salmon River. Witnesses: Willes Frederick KNOX, Thomas LEONARD, Oliver ARNOLD. CODICIL 6 dated 20 June 1820 at Sussex. Whereas son Henry has reconveyed Lot 12 on the north side of Salmon River formerly granted to me, bequeath the same to such of his children as my executors think proper. Witnesses: Oliver ARNOLD, Oliver BYRAM, Elias SNIDER. CODICIL 7 dated 28 July 1823. All my lands between Salmon River and Trout Creek will belong to my son Charles Edward and Richard LEONARD and Henry H. CARMICHAEL Esq. upon and for the several trusts mentioned and contained in a conveyance made the 28 July 1823 between Allan C. EVANSON, gentleman, Elizabeth LEONARD, George LEONARD Esq., Richard LEONARD and Henry H. CARMICHAEL Esq. on record in the office of Registry of Wills and Deeds for the County of Kings. Witnesses: Oliver ARNOLD, Maria J. LEONARD, George DONAUGHY. CODICIL 8 dated 5 April 1824. Amends bequest to George Townsend PARRY to include his heirs and stipulates that, in the event of his decease without issue, the property to Sara Leonard PARRY and her heirs. Bequest to George Hector LEONARD amended to include his heirs and stipulates that, in the event of his decease without issue, the property to his brother George Frederick LEONARD. Bequest to wife and children of son Henry LEONARD revoked and the property devised to executors in trust for the benefit of the wife and children of Henry LEONARD, to be divided among them as the executors see fit when the youngest child, Sarah, is age 18. Surplus of personal estate to wife Sarah, or in the event of her death, to Charles E. LEONARD. Appoints wife Sarah LEONARD, son Charles Edward LEONARD and daughter Elizabeth LEONARD executors. Witnesses: Oliver ARNOLD, Peter COUGLE, Thomas O. ARNOLD. Inventory, dated at Saint John 3 August 1826, valued at £625 by C. E. LEONARD included farm at Sussex Vale in possession of Henry LEONARD valued at £250, 500 acres at Loch Lomond valued at £250 and "Quarter Salary" from 1 January to 1 April 1826 £50.
