DUFFY, PATRICK FRANCIS (1875-1922)

DUFFY, PATRICK FRANCIS, doctor; b. Fort Augustus, P.E.I., 20 Jun 1875, s/o James J. Duffy and Catherine Quinn; m. 1903, Anastasia Beatrice Hennessy, d/o Patrick Hennessy and Katherine Bannon; d. Chatham, 3 May 1922.

Patrick F. Duffy was educated at St Dunstan's College (1892-96) and trained for his profession at McGill University (MD CM 1900), where he was a member of the medical football team. After taking his degree he practiced at Richmond, P.E.I. He moved to Chatham with his Newcastle-born wife in 1905. Two years later he was appointed to the part-time position of physician to the Marine Hospital, as successor to Dr John S. Benson.

Duffy was "always foremost in promoting clean, healthful sport." He organized baseball, hockey, and other teams in Chatham and was president of the local amateur athletic association. "A genial, witty physician," stated the Union Advocate, "his presence in the sick room or on the pleasure ground was always an inspiration." At his death, at age forty-six, he left his wife, Anastasia ("Anna") B. Hennessy, five sons, and a daughter. The sons included another Chatham physician, Dr J. Charles Duffy, as well as John J. Duffy, who was town manager of Chatham for many years.
